Emergency legislation: Three days more sick pay to help contain the Coronavirus
Boris Johnson has announced that emergency sick pay legislation will be introduced to help contain the coronavirus. Statutory sick pay will now be available for those who qualify for SSP from the first day of illness. Prior to this piece of emergency legislation, individuals would only receive SSP after three unpaid “waiting days”.
It is believed that the change will only be temporary, but may effectively apply to all illnesses.
“Self-isolating workers are helping to protect others from the virus and should not be penalized for doing the right thing” – Boris Johnson argued today. The idea of the legislation is to ensure that people do not feel pressured to come into work due to economic hardship and risk spreading the disease.
