Couples, including same sex couples, can register their relationship as a civil partnership in the UK, as long as both partners are aged 16 or over. However, since 2013 same-sex couples have been legally allowed to enter into marriage, giving them the choice to be married or to be in a civil partnership.

Dissolution of Civil Partnerships
When a civil partnership ends, it is known as ‘dissolution’. As of the 6th of April 2022, to have a dissolution of a civil partnership, it is no longer necessary to attribute blame in order to obtain a dissolution. It simply needs to be stated that the partnership has irretrievably broken down.
There is a waiting period of 20 weeks for a conditional order and 6 weeks to apply for a final order. During this process there may be disagreements concerning matters such as children, finances and property. Therefore, before starting the actual process, it is worth considering mediation which may help come to an agreement on these issues.
