Dementia Action Week 2023: Lasting Power of Attorney

Dementia action week, run by the Alzheimer’s Society, is from the 15th to the 21st of May. In 2023, the aim is to focus on increasing diagnosis rates. While it is daunting to get a diagnosis, 91% of people affected by Dementia believe it is better to know. Its aim is to encourage people who are concerned that themselves or someone they know has Dementia, to seek professional help.

There are many types of Dementia, the primary type is Alzheimer’s.

What are the main symptoms of Dementia?

The main symptoms of Dementia are:

  • Memory loss
  • Confusion with daily tasks
  • Problems with understanding language
  • Changes in behaviour

Is there a cure for Dementia?

Unfortunately, there is no cure for Dementia. Alzheimer’s Society’s funded research aims to improve diagnosis, develop new treatments and improve the care and support for those suffering from Dementia and their families.

If you require any support with someone suffering from Dementia or Alzheimers then the Alzheimer’s Society has a support line which can be reached by calling 0333 150 3456.

How can Taylor Bracewell help those suffering from Alzheimer’s?

The staff here at Taylor Bracewell meet many people who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or other similar illnesses. Some of our staff are Dementia Champions and Dementia Friends who are equipped to help those who are living with the disease. We are friendly and compassionate and will speak in short sentences using a soft tone and using simple words to assist you in understanding. We won’t boggle you with legal words and meanings. We are patient and happy to go over things to ensure you receive the best advice possible to enable you to make your own informed decisions. Our interview rooms are located on the ground floor of our building. They are quiet with minimal distractions from noise or displays on the wall.

We understand that no two people’s symptoms are the same and we need to be flexible and adjust to meet your own personal needs.

Many people who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or similar illnesses will want to get their legal affairs in order. You may wish to consider making a Power of Attorney. This is a legal document which enables someone else to act on your behalf and make decisions for you if you are unable to do so yourself. This may be because you are either physically or mentally incapable of doing so.

There are several types of Powers of Attorney and the most common ones are Financial and Property Lasting Powers of AttorneyHealth and Welfare Lasting Powers of Attorney and Business Powers of Attorney. These documents will enable those who you appoint to make decisions on your behalf in respect of all aspects of your life in respect of your financial and personal needs.

If you require anyone information on how we can help those being affected with Alzheimer’s, contact one of the team today by calling them on 01302 341414 or by filling out our online enquiry form.

"I have recently sold my property in Liverpool and Peter Caswell at Taylor Bracewell Solicitos acted on my behalf and he was outstanding. This was a very difficult sale due to the fact that the other party's solicitors was excessive in their demand and clearly ignorant but Peter was very patient during what ended up being a long drawn out process. Peter maintained professionalism..."

"Really informative and clear initial call - took the time to listen to my situation, understand what was needed and answer all my questions. One small mistake in the first draft of the Will (no-one’s perfect!) but quickly rectified. Peace of mind that everything is looked after if I die."
