Motor Insurance Bureau
It is estimated that someone is involved in an accident with an uninsured driver every 20 minutes in the UK. If you are the victim, you can make a claim through the Motor Insurance Bureau.
The Motor Insurance Bureau is a government body that pays out claims where the defendant cannot be traced or does not have insurance to cover the claim. Claims can be made by: victims of uninsured drivers; victims of untraced drivers and UK residents involved in accident with foreign registered vehicles. In order to make a claim to the MIB, the accident must be reported to the police within 14 days.
What should I do if I’m involved in an accident with an uninsured driver?
- Take the defendants name and vehicle name and model. If the vehicle is a work vehicle, ensure you take the employers details as well.
- Take any witnesses details.
- If the defendant refuses to give their insurance details, you should report this to the police.
- You should report the accident to your insurance company.
Stages of making a personal injury claim involving the Motor Insurance Bureau
- Submit a claim form to MIB, a response will be sent within 30 days
- Collect evidence of your injury, a medical report will then be prepared. A settlement pack will be sent to MIB, including medical report and losses you’ve incurred.
- If a settlement agreement cannot be agreed, Court proceedings can be issued to secure the appropriate compensation award.
