What to do after a cycling or car accident?

In 2020, the UK government published an article on gov.uk showing that sadly there were 24,470 individuals killed or seriously injured casualties. This is why it is important to always know what to do if you or someone you know is involved in a cycling or road accident.

Below are the 7 steps to take if you or someone you know is involved in a road traffic accident.

Step 1: Identify who caused the crash.

Collect all the details of those involved. This includes Names, addresses, contact details, car registrations (if relevant) as well as the colour and make of the vehicles involved.

If the accident involves a HGV or other large vehicle get a note of the livery and a description of the driver.

Step 2: Witnesses

If someone witnessed your accident, also collect their details! – These will play a vital role in future steps.

Step 3: Photographs and videos

Take pictures and/or videos of the vehicles before they are moved.

It is also important to take pictures of the surrounding area, such as pot holes and/or pavements as these may have been the causer of the accident.

Photos of potholes should clearly show their length, depth and width.

Try and reference the exact location by road signs or other fixed landmarks

Step 4: Police

If someone is injured or there is damage to the bike or vehicle, always report the accident to the police.

This can be straight away (in an emergency) or within at least 24 hours.

Step 5: Insurance

If another vehicle is involved, you must obtain their insurance details. It is common for the other driver to start a discussion regarding the accident, they often offer money (financial offer). It is important to not accept any financial offerings until you have taken legal advice.

In addition to this, their insurance company may contact you to make an early offer of settlement, this is usually a low offer. You should never accept these offers until speaking with a legal professional. 

Step 6: Visit A&E or your GP

It is highly recommended that you seek medical attention following a road accident, even for minor injuries. Visit your GP, walk in centre or A&E department for professional advice and to evidence your injury.

Step 7: Call the experts

Once all the previous steps have been accounted for, you may want to seek legal assistance.
