In 2020, the UK government initiated trials for rental e-scooters, making it fully legal to ride an electric scooter on public land as long as it is part of one of these approved trials. However, the surge in e-scooter usage has unfortunately led to a rise in accidents, some resulting in severe and life-changing injuries. Are electric scooters legal? 

Electric scooters are categorised as Personal Light Electric vehicles and are subject to certain requirements. They must have a valid MOT, lights, number plates, and signals (including indicators and brake lights), and should be registered for road tax. Consequently, riding them on public roads, paths, or cycle lanes is illegal.

Currently, e-scooters are only permitted for use on private land with the landowner’s permission, unless they are part of a Government trial scheme. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in a fine of up to £300 and 6 points on your driving license.

While e-scooters are advertised as a new “eco-friendly” form of transportation, they can be extremely dangerous if not used correctly, posing risks to both riders and pedestrians.
