What to do if your property is a victim of a ‘trick’ this Halloween

Every year at Halloween, hundreds of homes are damaged due to ‘tricks’ being played on residents. This may be in the simplest form of throwing eggs or ‘knock a door run.’ However, any damage to your property is considered vandalism and you may be eligible to bring a dispute claim.
Our Dispute Resolution team have put together their best advice on what you should do if your home is damaged:
Before Halloween, you should check that your insurance policy is up to date and covers your home and any contents. The different types of policies (comprehensive, third party, fire & theft and third party only) all cover different things, so it’s important that you have the right kind of policy for you and your needs.
If your property is damaged, you may be able to claim the cost of the damage or loss against the individual responsible. If this is something you’re worried about, proving who was responsible will assist if you have CCTV. You will also need to be able to quantify the repair cost that you are asking for.
Please note: If it is a child under the age of 18 that has damaged your property, then you may be able to sue the parents. Although the parents are not responsible for the acts of their children they are responsible for supervising them and could be sued for failing to supervise them.
Always remember that if the behaviour is a criminal act, you need to call the police and your insurance company may need a crime reference.
