Asda has announced that 184 of its stores will move overnight restocking shifts to the daytime. This will mean 211 night-shift managers are at risk and 4137 employees will move to the daytime shifts. This will mean they lose their night-shift pay premium, which is at least £2.52 an hour.
Asda has also announced that they’re cutting working hours by 22% or all in-store Post Offices and 7 in-store pharmacies will close, affecting a further 62 employees.
Asda’s announcement follows news that Amazon are to shut three UK warehouses putting 1,200 jobs at risk, with sites in Doncaster, Gourock and Hemel Hempstead at risk.
Redundancy Rights:
- If you are being made redundant you may be eligible for:
- Redundancy pay – this is usually if you’ve been working for your employer for 2 or more years and will be based on your age, length of service and average weekly pay
- A notice period – there are different notice periods depending on how long you’ve worked for the company – generally speaking, you are entitled to at least one week for each full year of employment. You should check your contract, as you may be entitled to more notice that the statutory minimum (this is true for enhanced redundancy pay as well).
- A consultation with your employer – this allows you to speak to them about the reasons for the redundancy and if there are any other options for you within the company. If your employer doesn’t consult with you and try and prevent the dismissal then any dismissal will be unfair and you may have a claim in the Employment Tribunal.
- Option to move into a different job – your employer may offer you alternative employment within the company, if you unreasonably refuse, you may lose out on your redundancy payment and you should seek legal advice about this.
- Time off to find a new job – employees are legally entitled to reasonable time off during working hours to look for a new job or make arrangements for training for future opportunities. This right applies to employees who have been given notice of redundancy and who have worked for at least two continuous years.
If you need to seek legal advice don’t delay, you have just three months less one day to take action to bring a claim in the Employment Tribunal for nearly all claims.
